Acne scars are permanent textural changes on the skin that occur as a result of severe acne. They can be distressing for individuals who have experienced acne and can affect self-esteem. There are several types of acne scars, including atrophic scars (depressed or pitted scars) and hypertrophic or keloid scars (raised scars).
How to treat acne scars?
Treatment
Chemical peels: salicylic acid is applied to the skin, which exfoliates the top layer and stimulates the growth of new skin cells. It also reduces the oil production thereby reducing the appearance of acne scars and improve overall skin texture.
Subcision: In this technique a needle is inserted into the areas of depressed scar to release the underlying scar tissue from tethering down. Sub scission is often performed during the same session as micro-needling, and/or fractionated CO2 laser to achieve optimal improvement.
Microneedling: Also known as collagen induction therapy, microneedling causes ‘controlled wounding” of the skin. It involves creating tiny punctures in the skin using fine needles. This stimulates collagen production and can help improve the appearance of acne scars over multiple sessions.
Laser therapy: Fractional CO2 laser resurfacing can be used to target acne scars. It is the gold standard to treat acne scars with a downtime of approximately 7-10 days.
Dermal fillers: Injecting dermal fillers, such as hyaluronic acid, into depressed acne scars can help elevate the skin and make the scars less noticeable. This is a temporary solution that needs to be repeated periodically.
Surgical techniques: In severe cases, surgical procedures like punch excision, subcision, or skin grafting may be considered to treat deep or large acne scars.
